Top New Gadgets: OnStar, Sony, Panasonic

If you got whacked by Irene, hopefully you had laid in some of the "12 Gadgets Every Home Should Have" I suggested earlier this year. Now that it's goodnight, Irene, may I suggest some new gadgets that may come in handy in Irene's aftermath or the next time you're visited by Mother Nature's wrath.

SportsArt Fitness S770 Pinnacle Trainer

Instead of burning electricity while you burn calories, this Rube Goldberg-looking exercise machine generates its own electricity while you work out – you don't have to plug it in, which means you can still exercise in a hurricane-induced blackout. Its designers at SportsArt America claim the S770's dual-action backward/forward and medial/lateral motion burns more calories and engages more muscle groups. But this mechanical jungle gym also monitors heart rate and, most importantly, includes a bracket for an entertainment device to distract you during your no-pain-no-gain electricity-generating activities. Too bad you can't power stuff in your home during a blackout with it. Especially considering its $8,500 price tag.
