Top New Gadgets: OnStar For Everyone, Wi-Fi Camera

If you got whacked by Irene, hopefully you had laid in some of the "12 Gadgets Every Home Should Have" I suggested earlier this year. Now that it's goodnight, Irene, may I suggest some new gadgets that may come in handy in Irene's aftermath or the next time you're visited by Mother Nature's wrath.

OnStar FMV

OnStar was probably handy for keeping track of Irene and associated traffic problems. What? Your car doesn't have OnStar built in? No problem. Here's OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle kit) – a replacement rear view mirror to bring you all of OnStar's goodies, regardless of make or model (as long as it's a fairly recent computer-controlled car). The kit costs $299, then another $75-$100 for professional installation – seriously, do not your resident tinkerer install it. OnStar runs $18.95/month for the standard "Safe & Sound" package (Bluetooth, auto crash response, stolen vehicle location assistance, hands-free calling with purchased minutes, virtual traffic advisor with traffic on demand and updates); and $28.90/month for the  "Directions & Connections" package, which adds GPS functions.
