1. Back-up

I am BEGGING you. PLEASE back-up your computer's hard drive. Please? Buy an external USB hard drive – a palm-sized 500 GB or 1 TB (a terabyte, or 1,000 gigabytes) drive such as the Western Digital My Passport or the Seagate Backup Plus costs less than $100 and usually includes software that automatically backs-up your files or, to be really safe, the nearly indestructible ioSafe (pictured). Consider it a really cheap insurance policy against losing everything. Read more about the best backing up options – including the top online "cloud" storage services – here.
