In 1996, WebTV brought the Internet to the family room, and foreshadowed much of the technology we have today in digital cable services. But being the pioneer isn't easy. The company was quickly snapped up by Microsoft and eventually became MSN TV. As web pages started to get too big for TV screens, the WebTV set-top box became an Internet boat anchor, and its successor, the MSN Companion, never really went anywhere.
