Behind the wheel, I want no distractions from the multi-ton vehicles hurtling around me at 70 MPH. But increasingly, auto makers are loading their cars with advanced (and distracting?) electronics. Here are a few examples of hot new concept cars from the recent CES.
This all-electric Soap Box Derby-like affair is designed for city driving. It's made from carbon reinforced polymer (CFRP) with an aluminum structure and so weighs just a hair over 1,000 pounds – both a Mini Cooper and a Honda Civic weigh more than 2,500 pounds by comparison. Two electric motors produce a total of 20 horse power, with enough torque for what Audi calls "dynamic traffic light sprints." You can even slide its roof open. Its lithium-ion battery juices around 47 miles of gas-free but likely gawk-filled driving, if and when it ever goes on sale.
