Hidden among the fir tree-disguised cell tower companies, electronics cabinet makers, service and quality assurance and insurance providers, system software suppliers and other cell phone industry businesses at the CTIA cell phone show in Orlando are a handful of companies making gear and apps you and I might actually want to buy. Here's a half dozen-plus of the non-cell phone coolest and most functional.

Do you have an elderly parent living at home with you? If you're worried about them suddenly wandering off, make them wear this secure wrist band. If they somehow get lost, it uses the cell signal – not GPS, which doesn't work inside buildings – to locate them. The monitoring service costs around $25 to $33 a month, depending on the plan, plus $200 for the band. Pricey, perhaps, and it's a pretty sophisticated system, but could alleviate a lot of worries.
