For most of human history, if you wanted to talk to someone not living with you, you had to saddle up the horse and go visit them. Alexander Graham Bell, with an assist from Thomas Edison (who invented the microphone used in all phones until the 1980s), let us chat with whomever we wanted without leaving the house – truly liberating.
