10 New Home Theater AV Receivers Less Than $500

How do you get the most out of your HDTV? Add sound to match the widescreen image. Yes, you could add a soundbar or a home-theater-in-a-box system as I suggested Monday, or you can add speakers to an AV receiver, as I suggested yesterday. Here are 10 new AVRs affordably priced between $250 and $500.

Best New sub-$500 AVRs: Onkyo TX-SR313 ($300)

This 5.1 channel AVR includes four HDMI inputs plus a front panel USB for iPhone/iPod connection plus two sets of component video cables (not quite sure what you need a second set for, but there you go) to connect a DVD player. But possibly best of all, this and Onkyo's other new AVRs allow you to watch TV without turning on the receiver – the HDMI signals from the varying connected box (cable box, Blu-ray player, etc.) gets passed through the powered down receiver from the cable box to your TV.
