How many of you got gift cards in lieu of an actual gift yesterday? How many gift cards do you that have gone unredeemed?
According to one source, the average American household has $300 of unredeemed gift cards.
Did you know you can get cash for those cards – as long as you have at least $25 left unredeemed on them?
Today, Boxing Day, December 26, the folks who bring you Gift Card Granny, a gift card exchange site, present you Gift Card Exchange Day, where you can sell your unused and unwanted gift cards.
Sure, it sounds like marketing BS since there are dozens of other similar gift card exchange sites offering 365-days-a-year gift card selling and buying services, but the Gift Card Exchange Day site gives you comparative offers from many of these varying gift card exchange sites. Even though it sounds like a gimmick, Gift Card Exchange Day serves a purpose: to raise awareness for something I was unaware of – that you can sell your unused gift cards.
At the Gift Card Exchange site, the process is easy – choose your gift card retailer from the long pull-down menu then enter the value of your gift card. Choose the best offer from the resulting list, and you're taken to that gift card exchange vendor's Web site for the actual gift card selling or trading transaction.
A $100 Ann Taylor Gift Card, for instance, could fetch anywhere from $65 to $72 from five different vendors. For some cards on some sites you may get as much as nine cents on the dollar. On the redeeming Web site with the best offer – GiftCards.com – I was prompted to ascertain the actual value on the card via a toll-free phone number or at the retailer vendor's Web site.
Since I don't actually have a gift card to sell, I couldn't complete the sale process. Perhaps one of you readers have or will and report back on your gift card selling or swapping experiences for the benefit of us gift card selling virgins.
