To get rid of Facebook ads on your timeline, there are a few things you need to understand and a few steps to take. Legitimate Facebook ads will only appear on the right side of your timeline or Facebook home page. Timeline ads do not go through Facebook and can appear anywhere on your page. If you see banner ads, or any ads in the top or left columns of the page, these have been put there because of an adware Facebook app that you probably didn't realize you downloaded.
It seems innocent at first, a friend posts a link to an app that offers profile themes, will "clean up your timeline," or promises to show you who has visited your page. You allow the app access to your Facebook timeline and information because it is reasonable that an app which is helping with your timeline would need that kind of access.
Unfortunately, these apps are a ruse. Most of the promised features do not exist. Instead, you may have downloaded an app that can cover your page with advertising. Worse, the app has access to your posts and personal information, which can compromise your security. This is called "adware" or "malware." The adware gets access to your account by enabling a web browser add-on, plugin, or extension.
What are web browser extensions and add-ons?
All web browsers—Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer—offer add-ons or extensions to enhance your web experience. Extensions include wishlists and price comparisons for shopping, ad blockers, page translators, and more. While most of these additions are desired, these adware Facebook apps can wreak havoc on your Facebook page.
Facebook offers specific instructions on how to delete Facebook add-ons in each web browser. When you follow the instructions note that you may want to keep some of the add-ons that are listed. Look for add-ons related to Facebook. You can remove all Facebook extensions but you may want to keep some of them. Facebook Photo Zoom is one of these useful add-ons. In order to clear the ads from your wall posts, it is recommended that you clear your browser's cache before returning to your Facebook page.
