Your media streamer is only as good as the movies, TV shows, videos, music and other media that it can stream from online. The more content available, the better your experience. Media players like Roku and Movienite, and Smart TVs now have apps (also called "channels") that access everything from Netflix and Hulu to niche video streams for local TV stations, food channel, Ted, and TMZ. Flingo is an app "publisher" that brings more apps to media players and Smart TVs than any other app creator. Along with making these niche channels available on devices, Flingo is determined to bring even more content to your player with the Flingo Queue that makes it possible to "Fling" (stream) web videos to your TV.
The Flingo Queue
Imagine that you are surfing the web on your computer and come across a cool video that you want to watch later, or perhaps share with your family. Using the Fling Queue feature, you can send videos that you find on webpages to a Flingo Queue. Videos you Fling are available in a watchlist (Queue) for you to watch on your TV whenever you want. By pressing the Fling bookmarklet in your web browser tool bar, you can send the video to any device on your home network that has the Fling Queue app. Devices that have Fling apps include D-Link's MovieNite media player, Netgear's NeoTVs, Vizio TVs, Western Digital media players, and Samsung Smart TVs.
Before you can Fling videos, you must download the Fling bookmarklet and save it to the bookmark bar at the top of your web browser —Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Google Chrome. Be sure to check out the video on the Flingo download page to see how it works.
As of this writing, the Flingo Queue is still in beta. Flingo is working out the kinks before its final update, and before it is available on more devices. Not all websites allow you to fling videos. A website must embed a code to allow you to fling videos from their pages. Some websites that allow you to Fling include Funny or Die, Revision 3, VEVO, Nike, Vimeo, Crunchy Roll, and some YouTube videos.
Flingo Apps
Founded in 2008, Flingo is first and foremost an app publisher. They create and build the apps that deliver the video streams. Media player and Smart TV manufacturers can instantly increase the amount of content available on their device by including Flingo apps. The Flingo apps channel provides access to over 100 video streaming apps—from a Ted channel, to Warren Miller adventure films, to a White House channel that streams weekly videos from the president. The list of channels continues to grow. Flingo also publishes stand-alone apps. The TMZ channel is an example of an app published by Flingo but offered outside of the Flingo Apps channel.
In January, Flingo announced Sync Apps, a social media app that can automatically detect what TV show you are watching. It then displays Twitter feeds with the shows hashtag (the #subject that is included in a tweet that pulls together tweet streams about that subject). It will also let you share Facebook friends who are also watching the show. The launch date still has not been announced, but when we hear more, we'll get you the details about how it works.
