Disney movies online streaming is now available from the Netflix subscription movie service. Netflix will have exclusive streaming rights to classic Disney films and future new movies by Disney. Many of these films are available immediately in the Netflix catalog.
In a separate deal Disney will grant exclusive rights to Netflix allowing it to stream future Disney movies, including films from Pixar and Marvel, 8 months after they have been shown in the theater. The exclusive streaming agreements will begin with films released in 2016.
This is a groundbreaking deal in the world of streaming online video. For the first time a studio is offering online streaming of their movies before it is shown on cable or satellite TV channels. In a press release issued by Netflix, Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix said, "It's a bold leap forward for Internet television and we are incredibly pleased and proud this iconic family brand is teaming with Netflix to make it happen."
If your kids and grandkids loved Disney films you are probably familiar with Disney's limited release policy of their classic animated movies. For more than 20 years, Disney would release a classic film on VHS. When DVDs we launched, the titles would be brought again, and again on Blu-ray Disc. Each release would be available for less than a year, and then would be "put in the Disney vaults" until the next generation of toddlers were ready to watch. Though it isn't clear if Disney will employ windows of availability, it's terrific to have the classics readily available through Netflix streaming.
Movies that are already available include: Dumbo, The Fox and the Hound, Aristocats, Pochahontas, Alice in Wonderland, The Great Mouse Detective, Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, and more. Earlier this year Netflix launched a new home screen allowing users to choose Netflix for Kids to limit titles to family-friendly films. The new Disney titles are easily found by choosing the Kids option.
The deal with Disney certainly breathes new life into Netflix after losing Starz movie titles earlier this year.
