6 Ways iPhone is Better Than Android

Some Android phones may have better specs, but here are 6 reasons why iPhone is superior

As you can see, iPhone literally tops Android.

As a geek, I'm disappointed iPhone 4S doesn't connect to 4G networks and hasn't enlarged its screen since the original iPhone four years ago.

But while there are many more models of Android phones, many of which offer 4G and larger displays, there's a reason – actually six reasons – why iPhone has and will continue to be a smarter smart phone choice than Android.

1. iPhone is Safer

Imagine a beautiful, richly-appointed modern home – with no locks on the doors, and located in a drug- and crime-infested neighborhood.

Now imagine the same home located in a gated community under constant police surveillance with Medico bolts on every entrance, a built-in security system, an electrified fence, Rin Tin Tin is your dog and Jason Bourne is your live-in bodyguard.

Where would you want to live?

As you can guess, Android is the open home, iPhone the fortress. This is not idle hyperbole – it's an accepted fact that iPhone is nearly impervious to viruses and other digital trespassers, while incidents of Android malware have risen nearly five-fold in less than a year.

I refer you to last week's post on this subject, "Android Virus Epidemic: Is Your Phone Infected?" Sober and scary and maybe the only reason necessary to choose iPhone.

2. Universal Operating System Updates

When Apple issues an operating system update, all iPhones and iPads get the latest version. Older iPhones may not be able to take advantage of some new features because they lack the latest physical capabilities, but it's all the same operating system (OS) (a minor update to iOS 5.0.2, which will eliminate some lingering battery issues and include some additional Siri capabilities, is reportedly imminent).

Most Android phones, however, are pretty much frozen. If your Android phone runs Éclair 2.1, it likely can't be upgraded to Froyo 2.2. If your phone runs Android Froyo 2.2, it likely can't be upgraded to Gingerbread 2.3. Gingerbread 2.3 phones won't be upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0. And so on.

One casualty of this petrified Android OS is the new Google Music service, which Google says requires Android Froyo 2.2 or later. This means no Android phone purchased prior to last May can take advantage of this iTunes-Store-for-Android digital music shopping opportunity.

3. Look Ma, No Caps!

Watch out! If you're an active smart phone user, you may hit your digital head against the data usage caps imposed by Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.

But according to Sprint CEO Dan Hessen, it'll be easier to duck under that cap with an iPhone than with an Android phone.

Hesse says iPhone is better at finding and alerting you to available Wi-Fi networks, which means you'll consume less cellular data. In addition, Apple has strict network efficient standards, which means your apps don't need to suck data from network as often and keep you from hitting your carrier's data usage cap.

4. Easy Sync

How do you get your content – your photos, your music, videos, etc. – onto an Android phone?

With great difficulty.

I'll bet many of you Android phone owners have little or no music or photos on your phone other that what you bought or captured on it.

Apple, of course, provides the Grand Central Terminal of smart phone syncing, iTunes. Getting your music or photos on your iPhone, along with your contacts and calendar, is as simple as clicking a few boxes.

Conversely, Google has mysteriously avoided creating iTunes-like desktop software to help manage your content and apps.

There are three third-party iTunes-for-Android software options: Miro, Songbird, doubleTwist (they're all free, so go ahead and experiment). While each performs admirably in their own way, none operate as slickly or are as integrated as tightly with your smart phone as iTunes is with iPhone.

5. It's the Ecosystem, Stupid

You can buy AV receivers designed to work with iPhones. Clock radios. Wireless printers. Earphones. Speakers. Many new cars now include iPhone connectors. With an Apple TV, you can easily and wirelessly transmit whatever you're watching, listening or playing on an iPhone or iPad to an HDTV.

Apple's Macs also are designed to work with iPhone (duh). In fact, Apple's desktop OS X is becoming more like iOS every day.

Android is only a mobile operating system and there is no Android-Windows partnership to ensure smooth cooperation. There is no "Made for Android" program. Android phones work seamlessly with few other devices, and when they do, how smoothly depends on which Android model you've got.

Which leads us to…

6. Personalization

No other device can be as highly personalized as your iPhone. Cases, earphones, cases, battery add-ons, cases, speaker docks, cases, car adapters, cases, exercise arm bands, cases – did I mention cases? – and lots of other stuff that's tough to classify (an iPhone-compatible toilet paper dispenser?). (I often wonder why Apple spent so much effort designing the iPhone when most of us cover it up – a mystery wrapped in an enigma).

The design and function imagination unleashed for iPhone accessories is nearly as impressive as the developer creativity applied to apps.

Did you ever try to find a case for your Android phone? There's not much of a selection. Case makers can't bring manufacturing economies of scale to bear to profitably make cases for the dozens of different Android models.

And in-line controls on earbuds often work differently – or not at all – on each Android phone, hence the mere handful of Android-specific earphones, such as the Etymotic mc2.

Bottom line: there would be no Android without iPhone blazing the path. Accept no substitutes.

First of all, with an Android phone, yes there might be not so much cases out there because Android phones keep changing which is a good thing! Would you rather have custom personalized hardware than having a unique looking inside of the phone!? Android phones are highly customizeable in the inside - which to me, and im sure a lot of other people is more important than customizing the outside of your phone. In the iPhone, you can change the wallpaper; great achievement apple, great achievement. Second of all, "Caps" really? Android OS has the same wifi notification than iOS, if not better. With iPhone you get that annoying message saying "there are wifis nearby" and stuff like that, whereas in Android, it'll just pop up at the status bar, no annoying pop ups. Also, if you're conncted to mobile data, and want to switch to wifi; however you forgot to turn off your mobile data - do not worry, the phone will automatically use wifi first rather than Mobile data. Whereas with the iPhone, you have to turn off mobile data too when you use it with wifi which is an incredible pain in the ass. Third of all "iPhone is safer", that is most certainly not true. the iPhone has a lot of bugs and crashes as well as an Android based phone. I have had both an iPhone 4 and and Android Smartphone; my iPhone broke down two times and it was an incredible pain in the ass to get a replacement - i had warranty, yes. & I have had 3 different Android Smartphones in the past year, and none of them had a single problem (Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Sensation XL, Samsung Galaxy Nexus). Maybe much older Android Smartphones, but you need to take one thing in consideration; if you compare an old ass Android smartphone with a brand new iPhone 4S; you're basically just being unfair. Then I can say "iPhones are crappy" when I compare a iPhone 3G with the new HTC One X. So yeah, read up first before you claim things like that. It's mostly fanboys that say things like this, and you obviously are one. You're in denial what's actually better, and as long as you're hooked up on Apple stuff, you will never speak against apple. I was like that too, until my father borrowed me his Samsung Galaxy S2. I was completely blown away! So here some "comparing factors" how and Android phone is better than an iPhone. & if you still say iPhone's the best, then you're just completely in denial or brain dead. (I'm talking about the Gnex here, some factors my apply to other Android Smartphones as well) - Faster - Better CPU / GHz - Better Battery life - Better Camera - More and better features - Highly Customizable - Free to hack it (load custom roms , root) - Better Market place (better tools, cheaper prices) - Open Source (almost no limitations) - Fully integrated with all your google apps - If you forgot your unlock pattern / pin you can confirm it with your gmail account, whereas with apple you have to make a factory reset which is just a pain in the ass - Most phones (esp Samsung) dont break as fast if you drop them than iPhones - iOS get's boring really fast - HAPTIC FEEDBACK = VIBRATION WHEN YOU TEXT OR DO CERTAIN THINGS - Widgets - Able to install custom roms that can actually increase battery performance + you can overclock your device. - Mostly cheaper than iPhones So now, what can an iPhone do? You tell me. Change the wallpaper? uhhh good for you.

Dude, this comment is brilliant. I'm upgrading to the S2 next month and I can't wait. I hate these Apple fanatics that don't try any other brand yet have the cheek to say that Apple is the best. How would they know when that's all they've known? I played around with my friend's S2 and I was amazed, especially in terms of customization. You're right, what's the big deal about changing the wallpaper or getting different types of covers? Just cos there's a smaller range of accessories/cases for Android devices doesn't mean 1. that there isn't ever going to be as many, or 2. that the phone itself is inferior. Grow up, you Apple fanboys

This clearly shows how stupid an iphone user (like Stewart Wolpin here)or apple fan boy could get, and not knowing what's out there. Tech Goes Strong- I'm not reading any more of your articles and will continue to discourage others to do so as well.

wow,What a moron!! did this guy do any research at all? Very little of what he's said is true. Samsung Galaxy S came with 2.1 and was upgraded to 2.2 in Nov 2010. For some countries they have already received the 2.3 update. Safer?!? NOPE! as far back as 2009 there's been iPhone viruses. http://www.pcworld.com/article/169405/iphone_virus_what_you_need_to_know... A simple google search and the the author could have found that out. The reason why there's more viruses for android then the iPhone is the same reason theres more viruses for PC's then Macs. iOS is only approx 28% of the smart phone market, Android is 43%. No Caps because some how the iPhone is better at finding WiFi networks? I've had both an iPhone and a Galaxy S II, I really can't see how the iPhone is better at finding wifi networks. If what the author suggest, " If you're an active smart phone user, you may hit your digital head against the data usage caps" is true then you're going to have problems no matter what phone you have. Syncing. What the heck?!? To sync your iphone you need to use iTunes and ONLY iTunes. With an Android phone you need NOTHING. Just plug it in and drag and drop, really can't get any more simple than that. His statement of using DoubleTwist to sync is misleading. The point of using DoubleTwist is to sync an iTunes library IF you use iTunes. It's the Ecosystem, Stupid. OMG! what a moron! They have AV receivers that are designed to work with iPhone because they HAVE TO design them to work with the iPhone!! They don't have to design them to work with Android because Android is DLNA compatible, which the iPhone is not! There for they have to work around the limitations of the iPhone by adding iPhone compatibility!! My Android phone works with ANY DLNA device. Like my Samsung TV, xbox 360, receiver and other DLNA devices. Most of which DON"T support the iPhone. Does he really believe that "Personalization" is buying a case and earphones?? Odd, every pair of earphones have I have work with BOTH my iPhone and my android phone. I have cases, earphones, car adapters, ect for my android phone. What I don't have is a BATTERY ADAPTER!! Why?? Because I have extra batteries which I can easily slip into my android phone. Did he some how for get you cannot change out the battery in an iPhone?!?! IS the author really trying to convince people the iPhone is better because you can't remove that battery but you can buy some goofy ass adapter?!?! REALLY?!?!?! All the "Personalization" he refers to is external. Which you can do with ANY phone, android, iPhone, WM7, etc. iPhones are all the same, seen one, seen them all. With Android, or WM7, you can find phones that fit your style. What do you do with an iPhone if you prefer an keyboard?!? NOTHING!! With android or WM7, you buy a phone with a keyboard! What if you wanted a phone with a bigger screen then 3.5"? NOTHING! With any other OS you buy a phone with a bigger screen. This just goes to show you you don't have to be smart to be a writer. Just be able to find someone stupid enough to hire you. Does Tech Go Strong even care about their reputation when they hire idiots like this? I certainly can't take them seriously when they allow people like Stewart on their staff.

I have synced PLENTY of photos and many songs from my computers to my android phone. It's very simple: drag and drop files or email yourself files. Simple.
ANON_01 | Dec 2, 2011
Difficult to sync...Really, that makes me laugh. All my music and pictures are on my external SD card...new phone no syncing necessary - remove sd card insert in new phone - done. As far as contacts/emails - gmail. As soon as I sign in to gmail all my contacts/email/apps are there. I haven't hooked my phone to a computer in years. "Conversely, Google has mysteriously avoided creating iTunes-like desktop software to help manage your content and apps." I can manage all my apps from androids market website..install and delete from there too. "You can buy AV receivers designed to work with iPhones. Clock radios. Wireless printers. Earphones. Speakers." My android phone is connected to my printer, computer, receiver all wirelessly either wifi or bluetooth and I even have earphones too. I can print on my home computer when I not even there and control all my directv receivers from my android phone! As far as "crapgadgets" yes iphone has a ton of them...you can have your iphone toilet paper dispenser, I'll pass.
